For more information and examples of sleigh beds try our sleigh bed category. The purpose for this post is to describe the often-times complicated sizing options for sleigh beds.
King Size Sleigh Beds:
King size sleigh beds are also known as Eastern king. Your king size sleigh bed is built to accommodate a king size mattress. The typical width and length of a king size mattress is: 76 inches wide x 80 inches deep. Because of the dramatic slope in the headboard and footboard of your typical king size master bedroom sleigh bed you can expect great variation in overall length depending on the style of your king size sleigh bed.
California King Sleigh Beds:
California king size sleigh beds or as they are sometimes called, Cal king sleigh beds are built to accommodate a California king size mattress. The typical width of a "Cal" king mattress is 72 inches in width and 84" in depth. Most sleigh bed manufacturers allow themselves a 2" variance on the width of the bed and will only ship different size rails (4" longer) with a king headboard and footboard being the same as the Eastern King.
A Cal king sleigh bed adds an additional 4" in length to an already long bed style. We recommend measuring your space carefully prior to buying a Cal king sleigh bed online.
Queen Sleigh Bed:
The queen size sleigh bed is built to accomodate a queen size mattress. A standard queen size mattress is 60" in width x 80" in depth. The standard queen size sleigh bed is built with a smaller headboard and rails with the same size rails as your regular king size bed.
Full Size Sleigh Bed:
Your full size sleigh bed will fit your standard full size mattress. A typical full size mattress is 54" wide x 75" in depth. A full size bed uses all new components with a custom full size sleigh headboard and full size sleigh footboard. The full and twin size sleigh beds do share the same rails.
Twin Size Sleigh Bed:
Twin size sleigh beds fit your typical twin size mattress. A typical twin size mattress is 39" wide x 75" length.
How the industry measures the width, length, depth and height of sleigh beds:
In the furniture industry sizing is a major complication. Our pieces are typically odd shaped with various slopes and curves. The sleigh bed is in itself one of the more difficult beds to measure. The furniture industry has adopted a standard of measuring from the furthest points. In this way if you are looking at the height of the a sleigh headboard that is curved and ornately carved at the top, the measurement will begin at the tallest point of the headboard and work all the way down. The same logic follows for the width and depth of any piece.
